Le prolunghe M48 hanno diversi usi:
- possono essere avvitate ad accessori ottici (come spianatori di campo o riduttori di focale) per portare il sensore della camera alla giusta distanza dalle lenti (per ottimizzare le prestazioni)
- possono essere usate per separare tra loro accessori meccanici che, quando usati insieme, possono toccarsi e quindi non funzionare correttamente (ad esempio una guida fuori asse potrebbe toccare una ruota portafiltri che ne potrebbe impedire la rotazione per la ricerca della stella di guida)
Le prolunghe M48 possono essere avvitate tra di loro. Per regolare lo spessore è inoltre possibile installare gli spessori M48 da 0,5 e 1mm.
